What is a BESS?
A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) stores electricity so it can be used exactly when it's needed most — smoothing out demand peaks, storing excess solar or wind power, and keeping critical operations running when the grid can't. A modern, containerized BESS brings several core components together as one system:
Hardware
The heart of the energy system
- Battery modules — the cells, grouped into racks, that actually store the energy.
- Power Conversion System (PCS) — the bidirectional inverter that converts the battery's stored DC energy into grid-usable AC power, and back again when charging. It also manages power quality and keeps the system in sync with the grid's voltage and frequency, working together with the EMS to control exactly how much power flows in or out at any given moment.
- HVAC / thermal management — keeps the battery modules within their optimal temperature range, whatever the weather outside.
- Fire suppression system — automatic detection and suppression built into the enclosure to protect the system and everything around it; Sparq's own systems use PFAS-free fire suppression technology.
Software
The brain of the energy system
- Battery Management System (BMS) — continuously monitors each module's temperature, voltage and state of charge to keep the batteries safe and performing well over their lifetime.
- Energy Management System (EMS) — the software layer that decides when to charge, discharge, or provide grid services, optimizing for cost and revenue.
